Decorating and styling your home can be exciting for some and stressful for others. Some homeowners can’t wait to pick fabrics, colours, furniture and decor to help them add their own personal touch to their new homes. From the minute they’re handed their keys they’re dreaming up their ideal living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms. Other homeowners, however, panic at the thought of decorating a room from start to finish. They don’t know what to do, or where to begin. Thankfully, jazzing up your home is something that can be accomplished by following a few simple key steps.
1. Find inspiration
If you’re on a mission to create the most aesthetically pleasing home, you have to gather inspiration! Gathering inspiration or setting a theme provides a road map for the rest of your design project – making the process significantly easier. Look through interior design magazines, collect fabric swatches and take note of furniture and colours that you love. Use all of these to create a mood or inspiration board to help you get a clear vision of what you want from your space.
2. Choose a base colour
Once you’ve established a clear vision for your interior design project, it’s time to dive in and bring your space to life! Since walls are the primary element of a room, you want to start by choosing the perfect base colour. Ideally, the hue you choose to coat your walls with should be influenced by the inspiration board you’ve already put together. This colour will influence everything from the furniture to the accents and décor you use, so you’ll want to choose carefully. If you’re creating a minimalist space, we suggest using neutrals like white, shale or even a powder blue. On the other hand, if you have a more eccentric style, you may want to go for deep bold colours like royal blue or emerald green.
3. Find the room’s focal point
Every room has a focal point – the most emphasized feature which naturally grabs your attention. Finding a room’s focal point is an essential step before you start decorating because everything placed in a room should work to complement it. Most rooms have a clear focal point – a fireplace, an accent wall etc. However, if your space doesn’t come with a focal point, you can always create one. Large pieces of furniture or unique artwork can serve as perfect focal points for a room.
4. Take key measurements
There’s nothing worse than investing in furniture only to realize it doesn’t fit in its designated space. Or, hanging artwork and realizing its not centered. This is why measuring is a key part of the interior decorating process. In addition to measuring, it’s also good practice to pay attention to the size of each piece of furniture in relation to the room.
5. Combine fashion and function
Now that you’ve got all the basics covered, it’s time to go shopping! When you’re out looking for furniture that best reflects your personal taste and inspiration for your room, be sure to keep functionality in mind. Pick pieces that are not only stylish, but also usable and comfortable. After all, you’re trying to create a space that’s suitable for you to live in. You also want to create balance when furnishing your home. Incorporating one or two statement pieces is great. However, packing your home full of one-of-a-kind furniture and artwork is probably not the way to go.
Creating the home of your dreams doesn’t have to be a stressful endeavour. By following these basic yet essential steps, you’ll be well on your way to your dream space!
