Qualico Communities Calgary supports a variety of organizations and causes across our city and in the communities where we develop. Supporting the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and the Civil Engineering Technology (CVT) program is important to Qualico Communities as many of the graduates from this program end up working with the builders, engineering companies, and contractors Qualico Communities works with, as well as for Qualico Communities directly. Nurturing those relationships from the start is a great way to build a professional repertoire early on in a CVT’s career.
One of the development coordinators at Qualico Communities, Valerie Gibbons is a graduate of the program. During Valerie’s time in the program, she became the CVT club president. The CVT Club hosts lunch and learns, engages with industry leaders to put on presentations for the students. Its aim is to assist in bridging the gap between students and working professionals.
“As a past Student club president and a graduate of the Civil Engineering Technology program at SAIT, I’m so pleased that Qualico consistently provides me with the opportunity to support the school and its students,” says Gibbons.
On February 6, Qualico Communities sponsored a table at the CVT Industry Night. This evening gave students the opportunity to network with industry and learn more about potential opportunities in their field.
Valerie and Nicole Irwin, who is currently enrolled in the program and joined the development team this past spring as a development assistant, attended this event.
“It was a great experience talking to my friends and classmates about what Qualico Communities does and my role in the company. Many of them were unfamiliar with land development, I was happy to let them know about a possible career path. Being their fellow student, I was also able to give advice on job seeking,” says Irwin.
Qualico Communities values hiring intern students in order to build long-lasting relationships and be able to give students an idea of what it would be like to have a career in their chosen field.
“It is really rewarding to work for a company that values my education, and I had a great time representing Qualico Communities,” says Irwin.
Since 2015, Qualico, Qualico Communities parent company has supported the Great Northern Toboggan Race (GNCTR) team that the CVT SAIT students enter. Glynn Hendry, Regional Vice-President of Qualico was part competed in the GNCTR competition when he studied at SAIT. The SAIT Team took first place this year at the 44th annual competition.
