Parks are an integral part of a happy and healthy community. They are quickly becoming a valued and desired element for homebuyers; especially homebuyers looking to start a family, or with young children. From economic and environmental, to improving community connections and physical and mental health, here are some of the amazing benefits provided by community parks and greenspaces.
Many benefits of community parks are well-known to residents. However, some of the most beneficial factors tend to exist beyond what you can see and often go unrecognized. It may surprise you, but parks also provide economic benefits to the community and homeowners alike. In Crestmont owners pay HOA fees, a portion of this fee ensure the parks are well-maintained, and kept up to a high standard.
As a homeowner, community parks are beneficial because they enhance property values of homes in the community. This means that if you decide to move one day, you can sell your home for more. Having parks in the community can also increase the amount of traffic to the community; which could help shops or stores in or around the community as well.
Beautiful, lush green space and fun, engaging playgrounds don’t just provide a space to play; they also provide a variety of tremendous environmental benefits to help communities thrive.
In a massive city like Calgary, carbon gases and other types of air pollution are a growing concern. Community parks help address this issue with the addition of trees! Did you know, a tree can absorb about 3 tons of carbon gas during its lifetime? Imagine how much carbon dioxide a park full of trees could absorb. Parks play an integral role in purifying our air! Not to mention, trees also help add shade in urban areas to help protect against heat-related illness.
Beyond improving air quality, parks can also help protect communities from nature’s elements. Unpaved ground absorbs water. Parks and green spaces with open ground and grass surfaces are a cost-effective way to absorb extra rainfall or melting snow that could otherwise cause damage to the community. With some of the extreme weather Calgary has seen in recent years, this is of paramount importance in communities.
Strengthen community connections
When you think of places where communities can come together, it is often parks that come to mind. Parks and green space help build a stronger, more connected community. Green spaces and playgrounds create a space where community residents can bring their family, meet their neighbours and develop new friendships! They get residents out of the house and engaging in their surroundings; developing a true sense of community.
The creation of community parks has also proven to reduce community crime rates. Parks get more people out and actively involved in their community, meaning that there is less opportunity for crime to take place. Parks also have shown to instill a sense of pride in community members. When residents take pride in the community they live in, they are less likely to commit acts of vandalism, and more likely to protect their community.
Help promote physical activity
Parks play in important role in the health and wellness of community residents. Community parks and greenspaces are a space where physical health and activity is encouraged for free. Anything from a simple walk through the community green space, to climbing on the playground and scaling the monkey bars is an opportunity for physical activity that is added through the creation of a community park. As a community gathering space, parks also allow for the opportunity to see other people being physically active; providing positive motivation for other community members to join in the fun!
Greenspace and parks simply make physical activity easier. They add beautiful scenery, and create a simple, free way to get out of the house and get moving!
Mental health & development
Beautiful community parks not only help us stay physically well, they help us stay mentally healthy too! Parks and greenspaces in urban areas have continually proven to significantly reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, improve people’s mood and self-esteem, and boost overall mental health.
Community parks are especially important for the healthy development of children. Being outside and playing in nature has shown to improve social skills, emotional stability and physical attributes such as hand-eye coordination. Parks also provide great opportunities for parents to bond with their children and spend quality time together being active.
